How to Protect Your Money Crisis

As a Certified Financial Planner for over 20 years I have seen many people struggle with their money values.  What is most clearly obvious is how the money issue can dramatically impact a relationship either positively or negatively.   As part of my client’s financial planning process I inquire about potential future financial family (parents, children, and grandparents) needs.

Facing Your Own Mortality

My mother died October 8, 2008. When she died, we knew she wanted to be cremated, and have her ashes scattered where my father and grandmother are buried. She made it easy for our family to make decisions we knew she would have wanted.

I found my mother’s death had a profound impact on my life. All of a sudden, my age was defined by being the matriarch of the family. Flashes of my own mortality kept creeping into my thoughts.

Dealing with my mother’s death confirmed one other thing. Funerals don’t just happen. Instead, they are a series of decisions that must be made by family members. Here are some of the decisions families and friends will need to make when you die.

She seems confident with no age attack at 50.

Is this age-esteem or just an image?

I’m the first to admit, life is too short to sit and suffer, and especially when there are scientifically based solutions available that help us continue to enjoy our health even though we are ageing.

Sure, we trade some of our youthful looks for some wisdom stripes – which we may not love when we look in the mirror – but if we feel good about ourselves these ‘lines of experience’ become far less significant.

Perhaps you are experiencing joint aches and pains, low energy levels and a general lack of zest for life. If you’re a woman, you may be at the life stage of hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia and disturbed nights.

Can You Remember Where Your Money Story Come From?

No matter what our financial background, we all have unique money stories imprinted upon us from a young age.

And whether we’re conscious or not of what we’ve absorbed, we all pass along these stories, feelings and attitudes to our children, partners, friends and colleagues. Even if you don’t talk much about the topic, that in itself, is part of your story.

The first step in getting a handle on your money story is to figure out what your parents or other childhood models taught you about money. This influence is so strong that most adults recreate family money dynamics — the familiar — in one of three ways
