Kathleen Murphy Lane

Kathy Lane spent 30 years in high technology, acting either as a founder or key member of the management team in 11 start-up businesses. During her career, Kathy has been a keynote speaker at many computer industry events around the world, and a frequent guest on radio and television shows. She continues to be an angel investor and advisor to start-ups.
Kathy served as Vice President of Dataquest, a market research firm that provides expertise and advice on the PC software industry to software companies, venture capitalists and Wall Street analysts. Kathy was also the CEO of Softview, the developers of the popular MacInTax application. As CEO, she led the acquisition of Softview to ChipSoft where she served as President of TurboTax Professional Tax Division and was a member of the management team involved in the ChipSoft initial public offering.
In addition, Kathy was a co-founder of WorkCard, helping to raise $10M of venture capital and form a strategic partnership with Adecco. During her management role at WorkCard Kathy helped create electronic collaborative workspaces that connected Fortune 1000 companies with staffing companies and temporary workers..
Kathy's latest business revolves around the concept of 'Diesmart', a practical legal and financial advice resource for those who must deal with death and the last stages of life, whether for themselves or for their loved ones.
How Kathy got involved in this topic is interesting. After the death of her husband's parents, Kathy was shocked to find that it would cost the family estate $9K in probate fees to get the legal authority to sell a van worth $25K. "Why didn't we know this", she asked her husband.
The more Kathy learned about the laws that manage our lives when we die or become incapacitated, the more convinced she became that most people know very little about the financial impact of dying. In fact, on average, dying "dumb" can cost a family up to eight percent of its net worth.
Kathy's research showed that most people lack legal and financial literacy about dying. In asking "what would happen if your husband died tomorrow", she found few women knew how to answer the question, which in turn led Kathy to create the business resource around legal and financial planning for the last stage in life.
Kathy is author of the book: Die $mart. How To Keep Your Money For Your Family

In her book, Die $mart: How To Keep Your Money For Your Family Kathy Lane describes how a personal family experience caused her to realize that most people know very little about the financial ramifications of dying. That personal experience compelled Kathy to write a book on the subject of money and the last stages of life, and the common money mistakes people make and how to avoid them. Kathy clarifies the rules and laws govern your life in the event of incapacity or death, and the importance of planning ahead.
